Module 10 Grade 1 EIRŽ Procedures (October - February)
Introduction
In the initial phase of the program, the 3-day EIRŽ routine is centered around repeated reading. Later on, by March, the EIRŽ routine involves helping children make the transition to independent reading.
During this first phase, you will work everyday with your group of 5-7 children on re-reading old stories, reading the current story, coaching for comprehension, and writing words or a sentence. You need to pay careful attention to your timing to be able to get through these 4 activities in 20-30 minutes. I always tell teachers that if they take longer than 20-30 minutes, they may quit doing EIRŽ because it seems to take up too much time.
Many of the procedures in the 3-day routine are most likely things you are already doing, "Just good teaching," as some teachers say. However, you may find the routine helps you to be more consistent in the use of these practices.
