Module 10
Grade 1 EIR® Procedures (October-Nov./Dec.)

Day 1, Step 4

Sound Box or Making Words

Sound Box

The fourth step, from October through November, is to help children as they complete 3-5 sound boxes on 3-5 words from the story. Starting in December, the children will switch to doing the Making Words activity instead of the Sound Box activity. In the scope and sequence for phonics elements, we have suggested words you may wish to use in your Sound Box and Sentence Writing Activities to help children learn letter-sound correspondences in a systematic manner.

In the Sound Box activity children break a word into sounds and put one sound per box. This activity helps children focus on hearing the sounds in words and it helps them develop their phonemic awareness. As they gain skill with this activity, you should do less of the exaggerating of sounds for them and let them do this on their own, only as needed. It is helpful for them if they say the actual word themselves. You may also want to ask them how many sounds they hear in a word, since this information will tell them how many boxes they will be using. Additionally, use the Short Vowel Chart to help children help themselves as they try to generate the correct short vowel.

After writing the words, it is important for the children to touch the words with their finger as they re-read them. This helps them make the transition from hearing the sounds in words and writing the letters for these sounds to reading the words.

The words that are best for Sound Boxes depend on the level of development of the children and what you are stressing in your regular reading program. For the most part, you should select words with from 2-4 phonemes which have phonetically regular long vowel and/or short vowel sounds represented by the CV, CVC, CVCC, or CVCE pattern (e.g., hen , time from Rosie's Walk). Once children gain skill in hearing the phonemes in words, you may want to add initial consonant blends (e. g., pl, br) or digraphs (e.g., sh, ch, th).
